Conference for Youth Workers

April 30, 2008
KPM2008

It’s the largest youth leader’s conference in Eastern Europe! Every year, youth leaders from all around Slovakia converge on our city of Zilina to be challenged, inspired and motivated to give of themselves to the youth of Slovakia. For four days, we packed out the largest conference center in our town to it’s capacity (about 650 participants).

Our theme for this year was based on a Slovak riddle which reads “What is rich, but often experiencing poverty?” The answer, in our context, is a Christian who does not know his spiritual identity in Christ. So, the focus the conference teaching was our spiritual identity as believers before God. Founded on the book of Ephesians, we emphasized that our identity as believers is that of royal sons and daughters of God, seated with Christ at the right hand of our Father – forgiven, accepted and loved.

There was a palpable energy in the air as hundreds of dedicated youth workers (most volunteers) looked around and realized that there were hundreds of other passionate youth workers sacrificing themselves for another generation of Christ followers. The energy often burst out in cries of enthusiasm, tears, laughter and applause.

From the Kompas staff perspective, we wonder how the event can get any better. One participant said boldly, “this is the best event for Christians in the whole country”. But definitely, God sustained it all, by intervening time after time in places of weakness and enabled parts of the plans or programs to go forward. And in the end, an army of youth leaders went back to their towns and villages better equipped and more passionate to reach the next generation of Christ followers.

New Direction – Café Closed

January 30, 2008

Kompas Café has been a trademark of Kompas ministries for the past 8 years. Probably you remember seeing pictures of this warm, welcoming space that attracted so many hundreds of students through the years. God has taken us in a new direction now with the café. The second week of December 2007, Kompas Café closed its doors for the last time to public service. It was an emotional time for us all. We have loved every moment of the café’s life. It was such a central part of Kompas life that it has often been confused as main purpose of Kompas Training Center.

Originally started as a ministry to local students in Zilina, the café, a vision of our founder Danny Jones, quickly became a popular place for both Christians and non Christians alike. It was the perfect environment to meet new people, start new relationships and point them toward Christ. The plan was that the café could be a help to local church youth ministries of Zilina in reaching students for Christ in a natural way.

In it’s lifetime, the café had special weekly programming, english classes, concerts, parties, retreats, camps, teas, coffees, icecream, toasts and much more. And for several years, it seemed that Kompas Cafe was accomplishing it’s vision. And in many ways it certainly was. No one can deny the lives that were reached, touched and changed for Christ through the ministry of the Café.

However, as time passed it became clear that the café had become a youth group in itself and had inadvertently become competition for Read the rest of this entry »

Davka web project

February 7, 2007

Our davka web project still needs $1500 to be complete. Here are the details of the project.
You may remember that one of our priorities here at Kompas is to provide training materials for youth leaders in the Slovak language. For several years we have regularly produced materials on cd called “davka” (which means a dosage of medicine). Hundreds of youth leaders have been trained and inspired through theses materials.

We’ve always tried to keep the material in a format that is most usable for Slovak youth leaders and to date that format has been cd. But now that the internet has become accessible and affordable to the average person, we believe the internet is the format for the future. We have hired a local web site developer to produce the web site and we are already well into the process.

From our last web posting about this project (Dec. 2006) we received a $420 gift which enabled us to make our first payment on the project. So, we still need $1500 to complete the project. (our next payment of $600 is due February 7, 2007).

To make it easy for you, we have set up a special account call “Davka web fund” at our parent organization Josiah Venture. If you wish to give toward this special project, all you have to do is make out your check to Josiah Venture and write “Davka web fund #36080″ in the memo. Then you can mail your check to the follow address:

Josiah Venture
Davka web fund – Acct. #36080
PO Box 4317
Wheaton, IL 60189-4317

Your support will be completely tax deductible and be documented for you by Josiah Venture in a year end giving tax record.

We would also love to know about your involvement with this project, so if you are willing to write us a quick e-mail (zshepperson@josiahventure.com) letting us know your intentions, that would be super. Thank you for your consideration of this need and your willingness to support what God is doing for the next generation here in Slovakia.

Training Weekend for Teams 8-9.December ’06

January 29, 2007

Because we would love to support not ony individuals but whole teams working with the youth, we spent time, the weekend of 8-9.12.2006, with leadership teams that are connected with students from our school for youth leaders (ŠPM). The teams were from: Bratislava, Púchov, Obišovce, 2 teams from Prešov, 2 teams form Kuková and Košice.

The topics for this weekend were:
Vision: why our youth group, our ministry, and our small groups exist
Team building: understanding our roles in the team, trust, and communication
Creativity in the ministry: how to use our gifts and to discover our creativity – even without big resources

Another aim was to create space for learning from each other. Because we believe that God called us all to ministry and He is giving the wisdom to all of us. So we created a special sharing time together with the teams concerning what had brought the most health in their ministry in the past year. What influenced your ministry most last year, what was the most remembered activity?

Each topic was supported by activities, time for processing it in inside of the teams and a panel discussion on the end.

Here is some of the feadback:
“The most valuable topic was, why our youth group extist and to look at Jesus’ ministry in comparison to our youth group ministry.”

“I now realize my responsibilities in the youth group and my responsibilities in the team.”

“I found out that I need to look at our youth ministry with diferent eyes God´s eyes.”

Chimney story

January 18, 2007

Reconstruction of the TCK furnace successfully done
Praise the Lord! The reconstruction of the TCK heating system is done! We experienced two cold weeks in December during the work time, but we managed to complete the project without freezing ourselves. It was a big surprise for me when we found out that the chimney for the heating exhaust was not straight enough. This meant that we would need to either pull down some walls in the building or to build a new chimney alongside the building. Both choices looked pretty expensive as we felt the pressure from the urgency of the matter. In the end we chose to take the time to search for the problem area in the chimney. This meant we had to demolish some wall to get to the problem area. The original building plans helped a little bit as we looked for the problem. At last we found the problem and made the necessary repairs. We felt good about the decision especially because the hole in the wall was in the good place (not in a public space or in the kitchen) and it was not so huge. This was all fine, until the reconstruction firm found out that the chimney had another problem area further up the chimney! I started to think if it was really a good idea to replace the furnace (although I knew that it was necessary). The old system didn’t work properly and the gas consumption was extreme. So, we prayed a lot and God was faithful. The workers found the right place to make the second “incision” in the wall and were able to make the needed repair in it. In both cases, the damage was not so big. Neither the floors nor any permanent structures were damaged. Our whole training staff and café team was also able to work in the building during the repairs. I was curious how these extra repairs would influence our contract agreement with the repair company. We have learned in the past that these kind of projects are more expensive that we plan. But in the end, the company manager decided support our ministry by not charging us extra for the extra work.

We visited Lucenec

October 21, 2006

This summer we helped one church in Lucenec do a KECY camp. Just a month ago we have received email from the pastor Tomáš saying: “Please would you come help us do a KECY club as a starter for follow up with the students from the summer camp. Peto, Amy, Mato, Miska and Draho prayed and went out there. We meet about 22 of them and had a really fine time together. Mato and Draho sang, Miska spoke, and Amy and Peter discussed the future camps with pastor Tomas.

P.S. Look through the pictures and you will find one picture with the car on it that only had very basic set but still running. (We passed it by on the way to Lucenec) Thats somehow we feel about Lucenec there is not much but there is heart in it.
